Meet Rocket Yoga Teacher Leon London

Jeni putting the treat into yoga retreat

So, why Rocket Yoga, Leon London? Tell us!

We sat down with Leon, to chat life, adventures and all things Rocket Yoga. Here’s what he had to say…

When did you first fall in love with ‘the Rocket’?
It was about 13 years ago, on my first training with David Swenson. After years of Ashtanga, and unfortunately gaining knee injuries, I was looking for something with both structure and freedom of expression. As soon as I took a Rocket Yoga class I knew this was the practice I was looking for, and it grew from there.

Why does Rocket stand out for you as a yoga style?
I can only speak from my own experience but for me, it’s one of the best sequence ‘bases’ I’ve come across – it’s so well designed. The Rocket Yoga sequence is very versatile and I love the way you can customise it. You can add ‘your own flavours’ to the ‘asana soup’ so to speak, which means it can be really inclusive, while also having that solid foundation.

Are there any parts of the practice that you struggle with or ‘nemesis’ postures?
I naturally gravitate toward transitions and arm balances, but I do find extreme backbends a challenge – and have to work up to them. I try to approach the asana with a positive mindset and clear visualisation. I always try to keep ‘ahimsa’ (non-harming) in mind, which applies to ourselves as well as others. There is always a way, and the way you approach a pose will be unique to you.

When you’re not flying into Rocket inversions, what are you up to?
I love hanging out with my dog, Whisky, a Cavalier (King Charles Spaniel). He’s got bags of energy so we’re always off on new adventures together. I sometimes get the train to my beloved ancestral homeland of Scotland, starting in Edinburgh, then to the highlands. It’s nice to get out of London. I also like to mix up my training with boxing and lifting.
