Inspired learning
Master the Sutras
Join renowned teacher and Sanskrit scholar Shamita Ray (MA SOAS) for an illuminating one-day immersion into yoga’s most foundational text: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
About the course
This specialist immersion explores the many philosophical threads of the Yoga Sutras, blending academic theory with physical practice. We move beyond the surface to unpick Patanjali’s central philosophy, from the famous definition of “stilling the mind” to the frequently quoted – yet often misunderstood – advice on posture.
The day includes a unique 75-minute yoga class featuring an imaginative recreation of the 13 postures Patanjali originally recommended, including the ‘sitting like an elephant’ and ‘reclining on a couch’ poses. From exploring the perplexing ideas of ‘magical powers’ in later chapters to discussing how modern yoga has evolved, you will gain a 360-degree view of this essential text delivered with Shamita’s signature warmth and good humour.

What to expect
We will start the day by discussing who Patanjali was, his central philosophy, and the complexities of modern translations. Chapter 1 will then be explored in detail, unpicking the famous definition of yoga – stilling the fluctuations of the mind – and investigating the fundamental roots of consciousness.
In Chapter 2, we move into Patanjali’s section on posture and the frequently quoted advice that practice should be steady and comfortable. We will then enjoy a 75-minute yoga class, which will include an imaginative recreation of all 13 original postures, including the ‘sitting like an elephant’ and ‘couch’ poses.
After a break for lunch, the afternoon will be spent on Chapter 3 (investigating the perplexing ideas of ‘magical powers’ like flying or becoming very small!) and Chapter 4, which focuses on the path to enlightenment and how these ancient practices can achieve ultimate liberation.
The day will finish with group discussion and questions.
