Why 108 Sun Salutations?
We sat down with Louise to learn more about this practice, and the significance of the number 108…
So, tell us about this exciting workshop!
,We’llI’m so excited for this workshop! On NYE from 1:30pm we’ll be coming together in SE London at Yogarise Peckham for this transformative practice of 108 sun salutations. Traditionally practiced on auspicious days such as the Summer & Winter Solstice, it utilises the ‘Tapasic’ quality of our Yoga practice. We’ll start practice by setting intention and bringing ourselves into embodied presence before linking breath + movement as our sun salutations begin. Quite quickly we’ll gather that flow state of body and mind. Helping to keep us in a meditative practice will be our live DJ, Neil Raitt, who’ll be following the flow and rhythm.
The practice of Yoga on and off the mat is something that I’m very passionate about – liberation is a collective endeavour. We will be coming together not just as a community but to raise funds for those who need it, particularly at a time so fraught. 60% of profits from this workshop will go to Doctors Without Borders who continue to do amazing work providing aid and relief where it’s most needed.
What is a ‘tapasic’ practice?
In yoga, ‘tapas’ refers to acts of self-discipline, particularly the inner-heat generated through strong practice, which cleanses the body + mind, clearing old ground to plant new seeds.
The practice of 108 sun salutations requires focus and willpower, creating inner heat (Agni) that burns away anything that no longer serves, allowing your full potential to emerge. Your breath guides you, linking poses together – exhale to release the old, inhale to welcome the new.
What’s the significance of the number 108?
This sacred number appears throughout spiritual traditions and in nature – in Hindu philosophy, there are 108 Upanishads (spiritual texts), 108 names for deities, 108 marma points (energy points) on the body in Ayurveda, 108 sacred sites in India, and 108 beads on a traditional mala. Pranayama breathing is often completed in cycles of 108.
Remarkably, the distance between the Sun and Earth is approximately 108 times the Sun’s diameter, and the Moon-Earth distance is roughly 108 times the Moon’s diameter.
Practicing 108 sun salutations represents a complete cycle of transformation – ideal for transitioning into a new year.
